Never Give Up

Have you ever noticed that sometimes in life, be it in business or sport, it is not the most talented that win or rise to the top? It is those who had the self-discipline to keep persevering, continue learning, fine-tuning and not giving up. While the current business environment is incredibly challenging, and most of us will be working remotely for an undetermined period of time, it is even more important today that we have resilience.

Why is that, and what can we learn from it? Here are four thoughts for consideration which link back to self-discipline and begin to define how we too can rise to the top.

Life Is All About Commitment

As the saying goes, “a dream isn’t worth anything until you put it into practice”; therefore, you need to turn your dreams and aspirations into reality. You must commit to them, create a plan to succeed and establish goals and targets. These may only be small and within reach at first, but they will be your steps to success.

Never Give UP

It can be at times easier to admit defeat and give up when things are not going the way that you hoped, or as quick as you would want, but do not fall into this trap. Anything worthwhile needs to be worked towards, be persistent and look for the alternative solutions and parallel paths. Being flexible and open-minded is of paramount importance. If you make a mistake, learn from it and move on, let others give up, you can be the last one standing, one step at a time.

Be Resilient

In your life, in whichever path you choose to take, there will always be setbacks, failures and disappointments. This is inevitable. How you choose to deal with them will determine the outcome of how successful you can be. Being resilient will allow you to recover faster, to consolidate your thoughts and actions, to seek alternative solutions and to move forward.

In the words of Nelson Mandela: “I never lose. I either win or learn.”

Have Self Belief

Self-belief is confidence in your own abilities or judgement. Always remember that no one will invest more in you than you. Self-belief will allow you to feel comfortable when facing new challenges and seeing them as opportunities. It will allow you to be sure of what you want and to determine how to go about achieving it with confidence that you will be able to succeed.

If you want to achieve your goals and aspirations, whether it be to reach the pinnacle of your sporting discipline or being at the very top of your profession in the senior leadership position, having the discipline and commitment in these four areas will enable you to get there.

To quote Benjamin Franklin – “Energy and persistence conquer all things.”
